Have you ever experienced the heart-wrenching moment of discovering damage to a cherished piece of furniture? Our recent project involved a dining table that had suffered a rather unfortunate incident involving balsamic vinegar and a misplaced placemat. The result? A severely damaged veneer that was beyond repair.
The Client’s Dilemma
Our client was faced with a tough decision: replace the entire table or attempt a more cost-effective solution. After careful consideration and seeing a recent transformation of a similar table, they opted for a full veneer restoration.
The Restoration Process
The first step was to meticulously sand and fill the damaged areas of the table. We then turned our attention to the veneer itself. While many veneer projects use standard 0.6mm thick veneer, we prefer a thicker 1.5mm option. This extra thickness provides a safety net, allowing for future alterations like colour changes or refinishing without the risk of sanding through the veneer.
One of the most challenging aspects of veneering is matching the colour and grain pattern of the new veneer to the existing wood. In this case, we worked with Scottish oak, which can be quite variable in its appearance. To create seamless joins, we used tape to bridge the gaps between the veneer pieces, ensuring a strong bond once the glue was applied.
We opted for a high-quality veneer glue, specifically designed for this type of work. This glue, combined with the pressure of our veneer press, creates a strong and durable bond between the veneer and the table top.
Once the veneer was securely attached, we carefully trimmed the excess and sanded the entire surface to perfection. The final step was to apply a coat of Rubio Monocoat, a superior oil finish that offers exceptional durability and protection.
The End Result
The transformed table was delivered to our client, who was overjoyed with the results. It looked better than new, with a stunning, rich finish that will last for years to come.
